The “Asking for a Friend” (AFAF) program has successfully concluded its first-ever five-week initiative, dedicated to empowering youth aged 14-16 in Erie County. Developed by The Prevention Council of Erie County, this groundbreaking program emphasized personal growth, mental health awareness, and substance use prevention through a variety of themed weekly activities intended to educate, engage, and inspire the community, nurturing a new generation of informed and compassionate leaders.
Participants experienced enriching field trips to places like The University of Buffalo and the newly upgraded Martha Mitchell Community Center computer lab. Community service opportunities at St. Luke’s Mission of Mercy further enhanced their learning, offering a robust foundation of resources for AFAF participants.
Skill Building and Community Connections
By the end of AFAF, students developed essential leadership skills and formed meaningful connections with peers and mentors. This supportive network extends beyond the scheduled five weeks. Participants created a social media Public Service Announcement (PSA) focused on peer pressure and substance use prevention. Under the guidance of Omeri Monroe, founder of TuneWorks Media, the PSA was crafted through collaborative discussions and insights gained throughout the program.
Campaign Premiere and Closing Ceremony
The culmination of the AFAF program was celebrated with the premiere of the PSA campaign on Thursday, August 14, during the program’s closing ceremony. The event took place from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Heaven’s Countertop, 1641 Hertel Avenue, Buffalo, NY 14216. The students’ hard work was showcased and celebrated throughout the ceremony, with representatives from the Mayor’s office in attendance to award participants for their achievements. The ceremony also featured Tanika Shedrick, Associate Superintendent as the keynote speaker.

“This experience has been very good for me. I’ve had the chance to step out of my comfort zone, meet new people, and try new things. I’d encourage any adolescent to join the program; it truly opens up many great opportunities.” ~ Current AFAF participant
